A Sensitive Topic

I am a big fan of That Guy with the Glasses. I prefer the Nostalgia Critic, the Cinema Snob, and Phelous. Occasionally I will check out comic book reviewer, Linkara.

I watched Linkara’s video today on the “15 Things that are Wrong with Identity Crisis”. One of the issues he has with the comic series is the rape of a character in the storyline. He acknowledges that rape is a very serious issue and that the issue must be handled well. Unfortunately, many writers do not do the issue any justice and instead of treating rape as the serious matter that it is and use it to tell a meaningful story, they only see it as “a thing that happens to women”. Linkara is disgusted about how it is used as a cheap plot device for the other characters and the comic does NOTHING to explore how it affected the actual victim. It was only added for shock value and to give the impression that the comic series was more “adult” and “mature”. He made a very good point. The video is long. He addresses it between 32:02 – 34:50. In the end credits, he tells the viewers that if they still don’t get why he was so annoyed with how rape was used within the story, do some research on rape culture.

I was not confused as he had made a strong argument. But I did so nonetheless.

This is where I should end things. As Linkara said, this is a subject that should not be treated lightly. Even though he said that he was not qualified to speak about it and did so anyway, I feel that I am not talented enough to convey my opinions on Rape Culture. That is not meant to be a self-deprecating remark about my writing skill. Although I don’t consider myself to be as good as some of my friends (they have an amazing way with words), I’m not saying I am a horrible writer. I just think I lack the tact to handle such an issue without offending many people, including my friends.

I will say that after doing some research, many of my counter-arguments have dissipated. I found that they just couldn’t hold up. I still have a few points and examples I would like to bring up, but I won’t for now.

If you really want me to share my feelings of a rape culture in the United States, tell me I’ll reconsider it.

Well said.

I did have a post planned about gender issues, but I'm not talented enough to write it out so well without getting too emotional and stepping on anyone's toes. So go here instead:

Where to go now?

It's been about 15 days since I last posted here. Besides my life being a roller coaster of emotion since I last posted, I've found a new blog site: Tumblr.

At this point, I don't know if I want to keep posting here. I mostly use Tumblr for brief thoughts, almost akin to Facebook updates. They're post that I don't necessarily feel belong here. So, here's what I'm thinking: For posts that require research and a slew of links, I'll post here, and provide a link on Tumblr. For my Onion-esque articles, I might post on both sites. Otherwise, I think Tumblr is going to be my go-to blog.
